October 2003, Southland Fires - Many areas were affected. Before visiting any trail, be sure to call the responsible agency for an update.

Certified Weed-Free Feed - Contact Bonnie Davis, (510) 657-5239, Two Horse Enterprises, for up-to-date information.

National Forest Day-Use Fees - The National Forests have instituted a day-use fee, called an Adventure Pass, of $5/day or $30/year. Available at any ranger station district office or forest headquarters office and many local businesses.

Cuyamaca Rancho State Park (pages 40-50) - In October 2003, the park burned and the horse camps were severly damaged. For information about park repairs and rebuilding, or to donate to the effort, go to www.cuyamaca.statepark.org. For camping nearby, try Stagecoach Trails RV Resort, a private facility in Julian. Happy Camp Canyon Regional Park (pages 60-63) - Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy has a new phone number: (310) 589-3200 x126. For information about the Mounted Assistance Unit, contact Jack Wildermuth or Steve Cozetto at (800) 782-2373.

Ronald W. Caspers Wilderness Park (pages 120-124) - The Orange County Board of Supervisors has removed all restrictions regarding minors.

Upper Oso Campground (pages 134-137) - Reservations can now be made through Reserve America. Call (800) 444-7275 for reservations, (800) 695-2269 for customer service.

If you can't get a site in Upper Oso, consider Rancho Oso Resort, a 310-acre private guest ranch located on the south side of Paradise road past the Los Prietos Ranger Station before you cross the Santa Ynez River. The author has not visited the ranch, but their information packet indicates they have group and individual camping facilities and 24-by-24-foot pipe corrals.
